Prior to turning professional, Kolanos attended the University of New Hampshire where he played four seasons of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I ice hockey with the New Hampshire Wildcats men"s ice hockey team

On January 12, 2012, he signed for the Dundee Stars of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom for the remainder of the 2011-2012 season before retiring. He is the younger brother of Calgary Flames centre Krys Kolanos.
