Born on 28 March 1862 and educated at Lancing College and New College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1888. After a curacy at Great Yarmouth he spent a decade with the missionary team in of Korea. Returning to England he was successively Vicar of Street Saviour"s, Poplar and Street Alban the Martyr, Birmingham.
After some debate he was appointed to the post to which many others felt he was so suited.
He served as President of the Royal Asiatic Society, of Korea Branch for 13 years.
