Background
Casson, Mark Christopher was born on December 17, 1945 in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England. Son of Stanley Christopher and Dorothy Nowell (Barlow) Casson.
( This is one of the most influential studies of multinat...)
This is one of the most influential studies of multinational enterprises ever published. As a book that revolutionized the field, it includes a critical examination of empirical observations about FDI, offers a long-run theory and other alternative theories of the multinational enterprise, as well as looking at the world's largest firms and offering predictions and policy implications. This resulted in the internalization theory that has influenced much research on FDI since it was first published in 1976. To mark the 25th Anniversary, the authors have included a new introduction, which reflects on the enduring impact of the book.

Mark Casson critically examines the postulates of disequilibrium theory, as originally set out by Clower and by Barro and Grossman, and identifies two key issues. The first is the rationale for nominal wage and price stability; the second is the role of profits in disequilibrium.

( First published in 1986, this work reports the results ...)
First published in 1986, this work reports the results of the Leverhulme project on multinationals and intermediate product trade based at the University of Reading during the academic year 1982/3. Chapter 1 summaries the main results of this project. Part I focuses upon the theoretical component of world trade, dealing with both the theories of division of labour and vertical integration. Part II presents a number of specially-commissioned case studies relating to the project, concerning the motor industry, the bearing industry, the synthetic fibre industry, the tin industry, the copper industry, the banana industry and the shipping industry.

(This book provides an analysis of the economic effects of...)
This book provides an analysis of the economic effects of culture. By culture, the author means social values such as honesty, dedication, and loyalty. Analyzing the economic effects of culture in a rigorous fashion, the author argues that the gains from technology in modern societies can be offset by high costs if the moral dimension is missing.

(This text examines how the entrepreneurial firm succeeds ...)
This text examines how the entrepreneurial firm succeeds by synthesizing information from different sources. The author argues that a nation needs to invest in social institutions, such as schools, families and organized religion, in order to instill a sense of moral obligation and so sustain entrepreneurial success. Themes raised in this volume include cultural perspectives on economic issues, entrepreneurship in a cultural context and the political economy of national culture.

(In this important new book, Mark Casson argues that the f...)
In this important new book, Mark Casson argues that the fundamental significance of entrepreneurship requires it be fully integrated into core social science disciplines such as economics and sociology, as well as into economic and business history. This book shows how this can be done. It formalizes the role of the entrepreneur as innovator, risk-taker and judgemental decision-maker, and relates these functions to the size and growth of the firm. Mark Casson discusses entrepreneurship as a form of strategic networking, showing how entrepreneurs gain access to established networks in order to source information, and then create their own networks to exploit this information. Applying these insights to historical evidence leads to a radical re-interpretation of key issues in economic and business history, including the emergence of trading companies, the spread of empires, the rise of the modern corporation and the globalisation of the firm. This authoritative book by an established scholar is essential reading for economists, social scientists, historians, as well as business and management scholars.

(Multinational enterprises have played a crucial role in p...)
Multinational enterprises have played a crucial role in post-war international economic integration. They have promoted intra-firm trade, technology transfer and internal movements of capital and human resources. This book provides wide-ranging evidence on their role in globalizing the service sector - especially financial services - in establishing international networks of research and development and in developing trade and investment linkages in Asia. Particular attention is given to the participation of multinationals in management contracts and joint ventures and the significance of this for host country industrial policy. This book is designed to be of interest to students of business, management and finance, and economics.

This work on industrial organization asks a number of questions. How far can efficiency be pursued without sacrificing equity? Will the liberalization of markets lead to greater inequality of incomes? Does the profitability of "big business" really reflect economies of scale?

( In this book, a well known theorist of the multinationa...)
In this book, a well known theorist of the multinational firm extends his major contributions to encompass the scope of the firm in general. Casson presents a model showing how the different activities of the firm - R & D, production, marketing, and distribution, for example - are linked in a way that is just as important in determining the scope of the firm as are the traditional factors of market share or product type.Casson infers from an extensive consideration of the history, development, and organization of the multinational that the scope of any firm is determined by the way it resolves the problem of coordinating these production activities; the possibility of its becoming a multinational, in fact, depends on the strategic problems encountered in these operations. After chapters in which he critically reviews the literature and sets forth his own theoretical insights, the author looks at case studies of topical concern in the shipping, construction, and motor vehicle industries in order to explain contemporary rationalization and restructuring in manufacturing.Mark Casson is Professor of Economics at the University of Reading and author of Economics of Unemployment: An Historical Perspective (MIT Press 1984).

( There is no simple strategic method for dealing with th...)
There is no simple strategic method for dealing with the multidimensional nature of digital change. Even the sharpest leaders can become disoriented as change builds on change, leaving almost nothing certain. Yet to stand still is to fail. Enterprises and leaders must re-master themselves to succeed. Leaders must identify the key macro forces, then lead their organizations at three distinct levels: industry, enterprise, and self. By doing this they cannot only survive but clean up. Digital to the Core makes the case that all business leaders must understand the impact the digital revolution will continue to play in their industries, companies, and leadership style and practices. Drawing on interviews with over 30 top C-level executives in some of the world’s most powerful companies and government organizations, including GE, Ford, Tory Burch, Babolat, McDonalds, Publicis and UK Government Digital Service, this book delivers practical insights from those on the front lines of major digital upheaval. The authors incorporate Gartner’s annual CIO and CEO global survey research and also apply the deep knowledge and qualitative insights they have acquired as practitioners, management researchers, and advisors over decades in the business. Above all else, Raskino and Waller want companies and their top leaders to understand the full impact of digital change and integrate it at the core of their businesses.

(Information and Organization offers a vision of the econo...)
Information and Organization offers a vision of the economy as a system of structured information flow, counterbalancing the more conventional view of a simple flow of material goods. The structuring is effected by institutions and, in particular, by firms, which specialize in processing the information needed to allocate resources. In place of the orthodox emphasis on the adversarial use of asymmetric information, the book stresses the use of information for creative purposes--for decision-making and coordinating the use of resources.

(Challenging the long-held belief that economics is a disc...)
Challenging the long-held belief that economics is a discipline that can be adequately pursued in isolation from the other social sciences, this book develops a new theoretical approach to entrepreneurship in the firm. Casson argues that the productivity of economic units-whether families, firms, or nation states-is affected by the degree of cooperation between the members of these units, which cannot be fully understood unless one considers cultural dynamics. The book combines economic and cultural determinants of performance into a single analytical framework, applying theory to a wide range of topical issues that will be of major interest to policymakers and strategists. The book's international perspective highlights the way in which cultural differences influence innovation and competitiveness at both the corporate and national level.

(This work seeks to offer a broad perspective and importan...)
This work seeks to offer a broad perspective and important practical insights into economic institutions, focusing on dynamic issues such as entrepreneurship and ethical leadership, which are crucial to institutional growth. Mark Casson analyzes economic institutions from an integrated social science perspective. This perspective is based on the rational action principle of mainstream economics, modified to allow for endogenous preferences and information costs. Combining plausible assumptions with analytical rigour, it offers insights into a range of issues, including the growth of firms, family business, regional business networks, international business elites, and the influence of cultural values on long run economic growth. The integrated social science approach has implications for all the social sciences, and so the book is addressed to both business and management practitioners as well as scholars from a wide range of disciplines.

(This text examines the internalization theory of the firm...)
This text examines the internalization theory of the firm which encompasses inter-firm networking as well as the internal organization and managerial structure of the firm. The key innovation is the concept of information costs - distinguished as the cost of gathering information on the assumption that it is true and the cost of ensuring that it is actually true - which the author explores through a synthesis of transaction cost analysis and organizational behaviour. A rational, profit-maximising multinational will economize on collecting information and trust, both across society and within organizations. Although this text focuses on international business and multinational enterprizes, the analysis can be applied to a wide variety of business units. Together with its companion volume "Entrepreneurship and Business Culture", it offers an analysis of the importance of trust in economic life as well as the related concepts of networking, consultation and empowerment.

(The figure of John Maynard Keynes has towered like a colo...)
The figure of John Maynard Keynes has towered like a colossus over British economic theory for two generations, obscuring the important earlier work of a small group of classical economists who were concerned with British unemployment. Economics of Unemployment restores these pre-Keynesian economists to their rightful place in the British tradition. It examines their explanation of unemployment advanced during the 1920s and summarizes the work of the principal theoreticians, the most notable being Keynes's Cambridge Colleage, A.C. Pigou. The book reformulates their theory in modern terms in order to test it econometrically and to analyze its continuing relevance in the post-war period. When formalized this way, the theory anticipates a number of recent analytical developments in labor economics. Chapters cover the pre-Keynesian economists and their theory of unemployment; disequilibrium theory; job search and unemployment; structural disequilibrium; policies for structural unemployment; the pre-Keynesian theory and the Keynesian revolution; the determinants of employment and the real wage in inter-war Britain; labor supply, unemployment, and migration in inter-war Britain; and, the relevance of pre-Keynesian theory today.

In this second edition of The Great Façade, co-author Christopher A. Ferrara brings the original work up to date with six new chapters addressing what Bishop Athanasius Schneider has called "the fourth great crisis" in the history of the Catholic Church. The additional chapters chronicle the attempts at ecclesial restoration by Benedict XVI and the "Francis revolution" following Benedict's mysterious resignation--including Francis's tumultuous Synod on the Family and his radical reform of the process for determining matrimonial nullity, leading to what some call "Catholic divorce" and a threat of schism on the magnitude of the Lutheran revolt of the 16th century. This new look at the 50 years following the Second Vatican Council is sure to provoke discussion and debate among Catholics concerned about the state of their Church.

How markets really work’ has for several years been my major research interest. It began with a fairly narrow interest in ‘market failure’ but has developed into a broader study of the impact of legal, social, cultural and political influences on market behaviour. The study of market failure has led me to range over topics as diverse as unemployment (viewed as a consequence of labour market failure) and the multinational enterprise (viewed as an institutional response to failures in markets for technology and semi-processed materials).
My most ambitious work is on entrepreneurship. I regard the entrepreneur as someone who specialises in taking judgemental decisions about what kind of trade should take place. He organises markets and appropriates some of the gains from trade by skilful bargaining.
By organising markets he helps others to economise on their transaction costs. I now believe that the crucial determinants of transaction costs are social rather than economic. Transaction costs, it could be said, are much lower when trade takes place within a social group than when it takes place between social groups.
Work in progress is focussed upon the dynamics of the formation of social groups, and upon the role of entrepreneurs in promoting the division of labour within them. The analysis will be applied to classical issues such as the comparitive growth of nations. It will also be applied to more specific subjects such as the comparative performance of multinational firms and to international differentials in rates of unemployment.
I prefer limited success in tackling really big issues to complete success in tackling much smaller ones.
