Career

Principal Norway and Hebron Acads., 1849-1854. Member Maine legislature, 1854. State senate, 1855; State superintendent common schools, Maine, 1855-1859.

Began law practice, Portland, Maine, 1860. Served in war, colonel 5th Maine infantry, 1861-1862. Consul at Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1862-1863.

Went to Minnesota, 1865. Member Minnesota legislature, 1867. State superintendent public instruction, 1867-1870.

Member Congress, 1871-1883 and 1889-1891.
