Biography Markus Bandi
Biography of Markus Bandi
Compiled on the occasion of the commemorative exhibition
from November 10th to 17th, 2000 in Wald ZH (Heimatmuseum)
1922 Markus Bandi is born in Interlaken.
1946 marriage to Lina Bandi, Adrian is born.
1949 Monika is born. The young family lives in the Zurich Oberland (Wald,
Steg, Gibswil). Markus Bandi paints naturalistic landscapes - few portraits - which he sells with some success.
However, the longer the young artist feels, the more restricted he flees from security, wealth, dependence - they live in rent - and chooses freedom.
1951 Markus Bandi moves with his family to Malcantone (Ticino), where he buys a piece of land and tries to realize his dream of building and living in his own house . Elvira is born. In order to sell his paintings , MB regularly travels to Bie1, where he lives in a small studio . The artist continues to paint landscapes: he changes to an
impressionist. A number of still lifes are created, few portraits.
1958 Markus Bandi separates from his wife and family and from now on lives with Ursula Schori - they live in Biel. A longer stay in the south of France leads to another breakthrough in his painting: the landscape, the nude, the portrait - the object - is overcome, internalized - abstracted.
1965 A life theme by Markus Bandi seems to appear again, again he feels restricted by security, prosperity, comfort and he chooses freedom. The artist emigrates to Italy with his partner (Monte Gridolfo, then San Clemente),
1966 Pandolfo is born. Markus Bandi moves to Toscana (Quiesa, Massaciuccoli) with his new family . A further
change in his painting style takes place here : Now the beginning of a work is not the object or the idea, but rather experimenting with lines, shapes and colors, allowing inner images that give the work the content : "... Not I paint something, it paints out of me ... "A new color harmony gives Markus Bandi's late works an additional surprising twist.
1971 Markus Bandi dies in Massaciuccoli (Italy).
