After Jesus, Peter is the most frequently mentioned individual both in the Gospels and in the New Testament as a whole. Markus Bockmuehl introduces the New Testament Peter by asking how first- and second-century sources may be understood through the prism of "living memory" among the disciples of the apostolic generation and the students of those disciples.

Markus Nikolaus Andreas Bockmuehl was born on December 29, 1961, in Duren, West Germany.
Markus Bockmuehl received a bachelor's degree in classical studies at the University of British Columbia. After that, he graduated with the Master of Divinity from Regent College and received a Ph.D. at Cambridge University.
Markus Bockmuehl started his career path at Cambridge University in 1987 in the role of research assistant in Ancient Hebrew Inscriptions. He became Professor and taught biblical and early Christian studies not only at Cambridge but also at St Andrew's, briefly at Regent College and the University of British Columbia in Canada.
Bockmuehl served as a tutorial fellow and Director of Studies at Keble and for two years as Associate Head of the University’s Humanities Division (with responsibility for graduate studies).
Among his authored books are This Jesus, The Epistle to the Philippians, Jewish Law in Gentile Churches, Simon Peter in Scripture and Memory, and Ancient Apocryphal Gospels. His teaching covers a wide range of New Testament as well as ancient Jewish and early Christian studies, while his recent research concerns early Christian eschatology.

2009Bockmuehl argues that early Christian memory of Peter underscores his central role as a bridge-building figure holding together the diversity of first-century Christianity. Drawing on more than a decade of research, in the book Simon Peter in Scripture and Memory: the New Testament apostle in the early church Bockmuehl applies cutting-edge scholarship to the question of the history and traditions of this important but strangely elusive figure. The scholar has provided fresh insight into the biblical witness and early Christian tradition that New Testament students and professors value a lot.
Professor Markus Bockmuehl is known for his sense of humor. Thanks to the anecdotes, culled from his wide experience in many years of teaching biblical studies and supervising doctoral students, his lectures are always very engaging.
In 1994 Markus Bockmuehl married Celia Rosamund Withycombe.
