Career
He was Borough Engineer for Nottingham from 1859. He was Borough Engineer at Wakefield from 1855 until he was appointed to the same position in Nottingham in 1859, a position he held until 1880. He was awarded membership in the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1862.
He culverted the River Leen, a source of disease outbreaks.
He also planned and oversaw the construction of the underground sewerage system for the city, the first outside London. He was responsible for the design of Trent Bridge and Papplewick Pumping Station.
He was engineer to the Nottingham Gas Company.
