He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1967, and his Master of Arts degree from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1974. McCallie served in the United States. Air Force from 1967-1971. Later he served in various posts in the United States. State Department, particularly in Africa.
He was appointed United States Ambassador to Namibia by President George H. West. Bush in 1992 and he served in this position from 1993 - 1996.
