Martha J. Cutter is an American Professor of English and Africana Studies at the University of Connecticut. Her research interests include African American Literature, Ethnic Literature of the United States, Women’s Literature, Abolition and Slavery, Racial Passing and Graphic Novel. Also, she is an author and contributor to different writings.
Education
In 1984, Martha graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude. In 1987, she received a Master of Arts degree from Brown University. Then, she continued her education at the same university, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1991.
Career
Between 1991 and 1992, Martha served as a visiting assistant professor of English at Swarthmore College. During the period from 1992 till 1993, she acted as a visiting assistant professor of English at the University of Connecticut. Between 1993 and 1994, Cutter held the same post at the University of Oregon. In 1994-1999, she worked as an assistant professor of English at Kent State University. In 1999, Martha was promoted to the post of an associate professor of English at the same educational establishment, holding the post till 2006.
In 1997, Cutter was appointed a book review editor of "Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers", a post she continued to hold till 2002, when she was made an associate editor of the same publication. In 2004, Cutter was appointed editor-in-chief of the same journal, working in that position till 2006. Between 2006 and 2014, she acted as editor-in-chief of "MELUS: Journal of the Society for the Study of Multiethnic Literature of the United States".
In 2002, Martha was also appointed Director of Graduate Studies at Kent State University and remained in that position till 2006, when she moved to the University of Connecticut as an associate professor of English and African American Studies. In 2012, Cutter was promoted to the post of a Professor of English and Africana Studies at the same educational establishment, a post she still continues to hold.
Throughout her career, Martha has also published articles in journals, such as American Literature, African American Review, American Literary Realism, MELUS, Women’s Studies, Legacy, Criticism and Callaloo on authors, such as Sui Sin Far (Edith Eaton), Nella Larsen, Harriet Jacobs, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Maxine Hong Kingston, Zitkala-Sa (Gertrude Simmons Bonnin), Kate Chopin, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Mary Wilkins Freeman and David Wong Louie.
