Thirteen-year-old Jesse leads a pretty boring life in just about the most boring place in the universe -- otherwise known as Ida, Texas. She cannot forget the death of her baby brother seven years ago, and how she just couldn't pray for him when he was sick. She never talks about it though, not even to her best friend, which is something she doesn't have, anyway.

Quotations:
"My writing has been influenced by the voices of thousands of teenagers who have passed through my life. It has been influenced by my love of literature, the archetypes and patterns found in the classics, from Homer to Dostoyevsky and Melville, as well as the modern southern writers such as Eudora Welty, Anne Tyler, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, and Flannery O’Connor. I have also been influenced by my family. Raising two sons sixteen years apart has kept the voice of the young child alive in me. On the other hand, having suffered the sudden deaths of both my parents and a sister and brother has awakened in me the lingering voices of grief."
"I juggle writing along with a full-time career as a public schoolteacher, writing early in the mornings before school and before anyone in the house has awakened. I work on small parts at a time, untangling troublesome sentences, revising and rewriting constantly. I worry over each word, working laboriously to achieve a harmonious whole. My aim as a writer is the ageless human heart and soul. I try to use characters of all ages, because I want to keep alive the notion of community, and not just individual pursuit."
Martha Moore married Tom Gardner on June 27, 1969, but the couple divorced in 1977. She then married Howard Lewis Moore (an attorney) on July 11, 1981. Mrs. Moore has two children: (first marriage) Peter Brandt; (second marriage) Michael Adam.
