Rep received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1996.
Rep began his career as a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Professor Johan Thevelein at the University of Leuven on the response of yeast to osmotic stress, primarily dealing with regulation of transcription. In 1999, Rep worked for a year in the lab of Professor Henk Tabak at the University of Utrecht, setting up microarray technology to studyyeast's transcriptional response to fatty acids.
In 2000, he became an assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam and held it for ten years. Rep was a research fellow of the Royal Dutch Society for Arts and Sciences from 2002 to 2007. Since 2010 he has been an associate professor of molecular plant pathology department at the University of Amsterdam.
Rep is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Martijn Rep is married to Debbie Keijner. They have 2 children.
