Martin Agricola was born Martin Sohr or Sore about 1500 at Sorau, Lower Silesia.
In 1524 Agricola was teacher and cantor in the first Protestant school at Magdeburg, where he remained until his death. Agricola states that his knowledge of music was acquired through his own efforts while occupied as a schoolmaster. His Musica instrumentalis deudsch is outstanding both for its material on music and its German style. The volume was reprinted at Leipzig in 1896. Agricola's foremost protector and friend was Georg Rhaw, of Wittenberg, who was renowned as a music printer. He published many of Agricola's works, including Duo libris musices (1561), Ein kurtz deudsche Musica (1528), Musica instrumentalis deudsch (1529, 1530, 1532, 1542, 1545), Musica figuralis deudsch (1532), Von den Proportionibus (c. 1532), and Rudimenta musices (1539). Agricola proposed a new "tablature" for the lute, superior to the existing one. His writings on the struggle between the proponents of the old and new systems of notation are invaluable to those seeking an understanding of that revolution. Agricola died at Magdeburg, June 10, 1556.
