Agricola states that his knowledge of music was acquired through his own efforts while occupied as a schoolmaster.
Agricola's foremost protector and friend was Georg Rhaw, of Wittenberg, who was renowned as a music printer. He published many of Agricola's works.
Agricola proposed a new "tablature" for the lute, superior to the existing one. His writings on the struggle between the proponents of the old and new systems of notation are invaluable to those seeking an understanding of that revolution.
