He received a Bachelor of Commerce. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1960. He taught at Osgoode Hall Law School until 1965 when he joined the University of Toronto as an associate professor He was promoted to professor in 1968 and served as dean from 1972–1979.
He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1983.
He was awarded the Molson Prize in 1994. He received an honorary LL.D from York University in 2003.
He is on the board of directors of the University of Toronto Press.
