Martin attended Magdalen College, Brackley, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, from 1950 until 1955, and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, from 1955 until 1957.
Martin worked as an English teacher at Berlitz School and others, in Germany, Italy and Britain. Then he was a location manager for Paramount Pictures and an actor and broadcaster for Italian radio. He also was a translator from Italian into English and a freelance writer since 1988.
Martin married Luise Eilers in 1960, but the couple divorced. Later he married Pauline Sunley, in 1975. He had a daughter from the first marriage.
