Martin Maginnis, American congressman. famous charge of the 1st Minn. Member 43d to 48th Congresses (1873-1885).

Background

Maginnis, Martin was born on October 27, 1841 in Wayne County, New York, United States. Son of Patrick and Winifred (Devine) Maginnis.

Education

Jesuit College, LaSalle, Illinois, and Hamline U., Minnesota, 1856-1861. Private 1st Minnesota Infantry, April 18, 1861. Second lieutenant, August 1861.

First lieutenant, September 1862. Captain, July 1863; major 11th Minnesota Infantry, September 1, 1864. Engaged in all battles of Army of Potomac.

Twice promoted for gallantry. One of the 47 survivors of the famous charge of the 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg.

Career

Removed to Montana, 1866. Editor Helena Daily Gazette. Later in mining and real estate business.
