( Martin Starr addresses two of the most important concer...)
Martin Starr addresses two of the most important concerns in business today: the globalization of commerce and the problem that U.S. business is having competing with other companies worldwide. Starr approaches these problems from the standpoint of how American corporations can develop business alliances with corporations elsewhere, rather than competing with them, and how they can build on their own strengths by incorporating the strengths of others. He fully analyzes the massive changes that are creating a new global-based economy, and offers strategies and tactics that can help corporate America to improve its global standing. Following a brief introductory essay, the work is divided into four main sections. Part I looks at the causes of economic turmoil, focusing on the long-wave cycles of technological change that have placed the industrialized United States at a disadvantage. Part II examines the effects of technological change, in particular the increasing need for flexible manufacturing systems and new methods of management. The reorganization of established firms, and the use of global corporate alliances, is the focus of Part III, while Part IV explores timing, the new competitive variable of the 1990s, and the strategies of time-based management. Also included are two research reports that describe how Japanese firms employ alliances and how foreign firms view the effect of alliances. This book will be an essential resource for managers and executives in all types of corporations, as well as for students in business and related fields.

(Production and Operations Management explains how P/OM is...)
Production and Operations Management explains how P/OM is fulfilling its strategic mission and responsibility for processes. It is essential for P/OM students to become conversant in new product planning. They must also be able to pursue P/OM goals in partnership with marketing, finance and other business functions. With P/OM participation, strategic thinking links new products to the best possible process configurations for goods and services. Using the systems approach, P/OM is shown as crucial to strategic global planning. Strategies and tactics are evaluated together for their combined contribution to productivity, low costs, high quality, timeliness, and total capability for the efficient and effective control of supply chain activities. Enlarging the importance of cultural perspectives and global literacy, the book anticipates tomorrow. Production and Operations Management, 2e is divided into four parts with its main themes as follows: 1. The systems approach is essential. 2. New product development ties in with optimal process planning. 3. Strategies and tactics cannot be separated. The field must be taught in that way. 4. Rapid and continuous project management fosters competitive advantage in an environment of accelerated change. ***How does this book differ from older or current texts?*** A forward-looking teacher and leader in the field of Production and Operations Management (P/OM), Martin K. Starr's book and on-line text reflect a sea of change that is currently taking place in the global workplace. The new role of P/OM is to partner with company executives to influence the integration of decisions of all functional areas in an organization. The only way that students will be able to meet this challenge is to learn and embody the systems approach shown throughout the book.

(Foundations of Production and Operations Management focus...)
Foundations of Production and Operations Management focuses on the concepts essential to a simple-quantitative understanding of strategies and tactics in the P/OM field. Using a managerial focus with the systems approach, this book clarifies the field of Production and Operations Management in its current state. The systems approach is ideal for the managerial focus because the systems approach crosses functional boundaries in search of best solutions. This line of attack has come into strong favor by industry managers. In lieu of detailed quantitative discussions, Starr has streamlined, clarified, and updated fundamental qualitative concepts of business and P/OM. This introductory text provides students with a solid managerial framework for making better decisions, developing career skills, and problem-solving to support company sustainability. The writing style encourages educational literacy. This textbook is dedicated to broad educational objectives in the belief that managers prefer to hire well-informed students.
