Torkelson, Martin Wilhelm was born on October 27, 1878 in Jackson County, Wisconsin, United States. Son of Iver and Martine (Anderson) Torkelson.

Bachelor of Science in Continuing education, University Wisconsin, 1904, C.E., 1916.

Career

Railway work in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia 4 years. Bridge engineer Wisconsin Highway Department, 1908, later secretary and assistant state highway engineer. Resigned, 1927, to specialize as consultant in municipal engineering.

Director regional planning, 1929-1955, also state highway engineer 1931, 32, now consultant to state chief engineer. Executive officer Wisconsin State Planning Board, 1932-1956. Executive secretary Natural Resources committee State Agilysys, Wisconsin since 1951.

Works progress administrator for Wisconsin, 1936-1938. Secretary Wisconsin State Council National Defense, 1940-1943. Prepared 1st highway bridge standard plans used by Wisconsin Highway Department and one of first in the United States.
