Martus Granirer is self-taught in photography. He attended Harvard University (1950-1952), Columbia School of General Studies as a philosophy major (1953- 1955), Brooklyn Law School (1955-1957) and Columbia University Graduate School's Master of Fine Arts program in motion pictures (1956-1957).
Self-employed as a freelance photographer, Martus Granirer previously taught at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, as artist-in-residence (1976), and at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a visiting professor (1971-1972). He was a lecturer at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, from 1968 to 1969, where he founded their photography program. From 1965 to 1969 he was an instructor and later an associate professor at the Philadelphia College of Art.
