Mary Elizabeth Burt was born on June 11, 1850 at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Roswell and Rotalana Burt.
Mary Burt received her earliest education in the public schools in Wisconsin. She then went to Anna Moody's Academy and for one year to Oberlin College. Unable to continue her college course, she completed its equivalent with private teachers.
In 1893 Mary Burt went to New York, taught for a time in a private school, and became the editor of the Scribner School Reading Series. She had already had considerable experience in the editing of school texts and brought to this work a knowledge of the needs and tastes of children, as well as a firm belief in the value of the best literature as a means of character education.
She wrote several books of literary criticism, Browning's Women (1887), Literary Landmarks (1889), The World's Literature (1890).
Her more important texts are a school edition of John Burroughs's Birds and Bees (1888), Seed Thoughts for the Growing Life from Robert Browning (1885), The Story of the German Iliad (1892), The Eugene Field Book (with M. B. Cable) (1898), The Cable Story Book (with L. L. Cable) (1899), The Lanier Book (1904), Poems Every Child Should Know (1904), and Prose Every Child Should Know (1908).
The last two volumes show excellent selection, adapted to the memorizing of good literature by children, and are widely used in schools. Miss Burt's Bird Song Phonetic Charts (1913) have value in nature study.
During the last few years of her life she was something of an invalid and lived in retirement at her home, Englewood Cliffs, Coytesville, New Jersey, where she died.

In educational practise she believed in the Socratic and Froebelian methods, in manual training, and in psychological methods of teaching reading. She was active in the contest for equal pay for primary teachers and favored woman suffrage, but found little time for organization work.
Quotations: Most of her literary work was editing, and she wrote in the introduction to one of her texts: "There is more religion in editing one good book that shall carry forth and hand down the torch of life, than in writing a dozen of indifferent merit. "
Her personality was a very earnest one, with all its enthusiasms devoted to children, whom she loved and understood well.
