In her early years, Cantwell attended Colt Memorial High School, which she finished in 1949. In 1953, Mary received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College.
Shortly after graduation from Connecticut College in 1953, Mary found work as a copywriter for Mademoiselle magazine, a post she held till 1958. During the period from 1958 till 1959, Cantwell served as a feature writer for Vogue magazine. In 1962, Mary was made a senior features editor at Mademoiselle, where she remained until 1980, when she was offered to join the editorial board of the New York Times. In 1996, Mary left the post. While at the Times, Cantwell wrote editorials, as well as the "Hers" column on a variety of topics.
In the 1990's, Mary published three personal memoirs. After "American Girl" was published in 1992, she heard from readers, who wanted more information on the lead character, and to answer those requests, Cantwell wrote "Manhattan, When I was Young", which was published three years later. Her last book, published in 1998, was "Speaking with Strangers".
