Carew was born on December 1, 1936 in Omaha, United States; the daughter of Francis Thomas Dwyer and Mary Dolores (Redder) Dwyer.
Carew received a Bachelor of Arts degree from College of St. Catherine (nowadays St. Catherine University) in 1960. She earned her Master of Arts degree from City University of New York in 1998.
Carew began her career as a director of editing and writing at Frank N. Magid Associates, Inc. in 1986 and held it for two years. Then in 1992, she was appointed a production manager at Gallaudet University Press, where she worked until 1996.
Also Mary served as a managing editor of American Annals of the Deaf. Since 2002 she has been a managing editor at Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center.
Carew is a member of Beta Beta Beta.
On October 7, 1961 Mary Carew married Donald D. Carew, with whom she divorced in March 1983. They have four children.
