In 1981 Mary received Bachelor of Arts at University of Minnesota.
Mary worked as a volunteer at Eslinger Sleddog Races in International Falls, Minnesota, United States. In 1996 she was a selection judge at Voyageurs National Park, Artist in Residency Program, and a junior high youth group leader.
Moreover, Mary taught writing workshops at colleges, universities, and for the Institute of Children’s Literature in West Redding. She also worked variously as an immigrations clerk, horticultural worker, piano player, real estate agent, nursing home aid, maid, and English department assistant.
