This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Osmond being a great deal too far gone in the tender pass...)
Osmond being a great deal too far gone in the tender passion to have any repugnance to associating with those, whom in point of pomp and circumstance, and, indeed, on every other consideration, the world, and he himself in any other case, would have considered as his inferiors, had accepted their invitation. Neither Mr. norM rs. Lascelles accompanied their daughter in this visit, andO smond drove her there in his curricle. There is something in this affair that I cannot like, said Mr. Lascelles to his wife, after he had taken leave of Caroline, and seen her drive off with her accomplished lover; I have a great mind . The fact was, that Charles soon discovered the shrewd ness of Catherine's observation and too well know ing that his foibles were not of a kind to escape it. (Excerpt from Trials, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale "And a very jud...)
Excerpt from Trials, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale "And a very judicious monition too of Miss Mathews," said Mr. Dorrington, her father. "I only wish that she had possessed authority enough to cause her counsels to be followed; and that you. Miss Dorrington, could be pursuaded into the manners of a gentlewoman." "It is a sad thing, indeed, Catherine," said Lady Vincent, adding her remonstrances, "it is a very sad thing to see a girl of your age (for you are now in your sixteenth year,) - I say it is a very sad, and a very shocking thing, to find you so insensible to what ought to be the conduct and manners of a young woman of rank and fashion." "Why what ought they to be aunt?" she inquired with a starting tear, and a cheek the pure vermillion of which was heightened with extreme vexation. "Catherine, I desire that you don't interrupt your aunt, but attend to what she wishes to say to you," observed Mr. Dorrington; "and do, for heaven's sake, put that little beast of a dog down;" and he snatched him with violence from the lap of his poor little mistress, who, too much in terror of her father to rebel, sat in mute expectation of what she was to hear, trying from a variety of motives to suppress the tears, which could not, after all, be repelled; but which every now and then broke out in a stifled sob, as her aunt and her father alternately laid down to her the various duties of an elegant young gentlewoman; duties which, it must be confessed, poor Catherine was sadly remiss in performing. (Excerpt from Reminiscences of Thought and Feeling, Vol. 1...)
Excerpt from Reminiscences of Thought and Feeling, Vol. 1 As there are portions of this little work, which perhaps, in the opinion of some readers, would have been better omitted, or at all events, left to take their chance of publication after the writer's decease, it may be proper for me to state, that, although it has long been impressed upon my mind that a sketch of the leading features of my religious experience, might be useful to some of my fellow creatures, I had not the slightest idea of introducing it in this volume, when I began to write it; nor, for some time afterwards. I was insensibly led into the undertaking, and seemed to myself to be in the fulfilment of a duty, in proceeding with it. Excerpt from The Favourite of Nature, Vol. 2 of 3: A Tale I believe I can never be in danger of thinking myself superior to Mortimer. His education has of course given him the decided and proper advantage over me in literary attainments. In points of taste we do not much differ, except that he has not. That elevated idea of the delicacy and beauty of the pleasures resulting from the imagination which I have Constituting, as they do, in my mind, the principal charm and ornament of exist ence. This, howeve', I am conv1nced, arises less 'from 'want of feeling, than from a habit of austere self-denial, which he thinks it right and proper to en courage. Excerpt from The Favourite of Nature, Vol. 3 of 3: A Tale She was released from her engagement with Mortimer, and she was receiving the addresses of Mr. Waldegrave: and was she happy? Alas! no - happiness was still to be sought. It did not lie in the fulfilment of her wishes; for even as the affianced wife of Mr. Waldegrave, Eliza was unhappy. The same restlessness of spirit haunted her still, and poisoned every prospect of happiness. If, in her engagement with Mortimer, she had lamented her deficiency of affection for him, and had foreseen no possibility of passing her life happily with a person whom she only esteemed, she might now' (could she have sufficiently divested herself of passion to reason upon the case) have seen the still less probability of enjoying any permanent comfort in an union with one, whom she passionately loved, indeed, but with all the inconsistency and variation of feeling which commonly attend enthusiastic attachments.
