O’Gorman completed a BS in Economics in 1970 and an MBA in Finance in 1974, both from New York University. She was raised In Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.
One of the first women to join a senior management track at a money center bank, Mary O'Gorman started her career as a corporate finance trainee at Chemical Bank (now part of JPMorgan Chase). She was recruited from there to Citibank's corporate finance department where she specialized in Media and Communications companies. She then worked at Bankers Trust, first covering Northern California accounts and then moved to Strategic Planning, an internal management consulting staff for the Office of the Chairman. Later, at American Reinsurance Company and returning to Citibank, she played a pioneering role in the use of financial guarantee insurance for securitized and structured transactions and helped found two financial guarantee insurance companies serving variously as a member of a Board of Directors, Management Committee and senior executive. As Finance VP of a financial sponsor, she arranged financing for real estate in the U.S. and Moscow. She later worked as an executive recruiter covering hedge funds and other financial firms.
