Mary Lyndon Shanley was born on May 13, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois, United States. She is the daughter of J. Lyndon and Barbara (Smith) Shanley.
Shanley received her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College in 1966 and her Masters and Doctoral degrees in political science from Harvard University in 1968 and 1972, respectively.
She also attended Columbia University from 1975 to 1976.
Shanley started her career as an assistant professor of political science at Regis College in Weston in 1972. The next year, she started her long relationship with Vassar College. She first served there as an assistant professor, since 1983 as an associate professor and in 1988 was appointed as a professor of political science there. Currently, she holds the position of the Margaret Stiles Halleck Professor of Political Science at Vassar College and lives in Poughkeepsie, New York where she also teaches a writing course to women in the local jail.
During her long teaching career, Shanley was also a speaker at colleges and universities, including University of Sussex, Princeton University, Smith College, Vanderbilt University, Universidad Autonoma de Mexico, University of Bologna, Columbia University, Brandéis University, University of Guadalajara and Georgetown University.

1989Shanley is a member of the International Political Science Association, American Political Science Association, Women’s Caucus for Political Science, Northeast Political Science Association and Phi Beta Kappa.
Shanley married Frederick R. Chromey on May 31, 1971. The couple has 2 children: Katherine and Anthony.
