Mary Jackson graduated in mathematics and physical sciences at the Hampton Institute in 1942.2 3 She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha brotherhood.
After graduating, Jackson taught mathematics at a black school in Calvert County, Maryland for a year.4 She also worked as a tutor for high school and college students, a task she did throughout her life. In 1953 he accepted an offer to work for the engineer Kazimierz Czarnecki in the Supersonic Pressure Tunnel. To get the promotion to engineer, Jackson needed to get a degree in math and physics in night courses. The studies were managed by the University of Virginia but were carried out at the Hampton High School, which was at that time an institution only for whites, so Jackson had to submit a petition to the Hampton City Council to be allowed to attend to the classes. After completing the courses, she was promoted to aerospace engineer in 1958 being the first black woman to reach an engineering degree at NASA. He then went to work analyzing the data of the wind tunnel experiments and also of data obtained with flights of real ships in the Theoretical Aerodynamics Section of the Division of Subsonic and Transonic Aerodynamics in Langley. Its objective was to understand the airflow, including the thrust and drag forces.
During her time as an engineer at NASA, she worked in several divisions: the Compressibility Research Division, Real Scale Research Division, High-Speed Aerodynamics Division, and the Subsonic-Transonic Aerodynamics Division.
He continued working at NASA until his retirement in 1985.
She was a very hardworking woman who fought for what she wanted, she did not let herself be overcome by the circumstances they were going through at the time since being a woman of color it was very difficult for them to do great things, but she could demonstrate the counteraction.
