OWEN, Mary Alicia was born on January 29, 1858 in St. Joseph, Missouri, United States of America Daughter of Honourable James Alfred Owen and Agnes Jeanette, daughter of James Cargill.
Studied at private school. Vassar College.
Began by writing ballads for parlour recitations. Later, wrote words to be set to music. In 1886 definitely settled on literature as a profession.
Wrote many short stories. 1888, happened on important discoveries in Voodoo magic, and later published them, or announced them in folk-lore societies. 1892, was admitted to tribal membership with the Indians.
Joined their secret societies and has written much of their beliefs and customs. 1898, turned her attention to gypsies.
