Catastrophic events are known to cause mental health problems in some victims. However, the scope and nature of such problems and the way they vary by type of disaster and type of community are important research issues yet to be resolved. The purpose of this monograph is to present papers on these topics by some of the outstanding investigators in disaster research. The papers are divided into three major sections: disaster characteristics, community effects, and research issues.
