(Prayer is often a plea for help. Yet, when we are grievin...)
Prayer is often a plea for help. Yet, when we are grieving, it is sometimes difficult to ask our generous and merciful God for what we need. Calling on Mary to pray with us in our sadness can be very reassuring. We can ask her to join us in our prayer, to intercede for us. Mary understands our grief. While holding us in her loving embrace, she takes our pleas before her Son. She is our role model, protector, teacher, advocate, and mother. In Grieving with Mary, author Mary K. Doyle finds comfort and healing in traditional Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin. By detailing the many ways Catholics approach Mary, she encourages readers to use one or more of the following to nurture their own personal relationship with the Mother of God: Hymns Shrines Prayers Rosary beads Devotional art Labyrinths Icons Feasts and processions Grieving with Mary includes an Appendix that offers Feast dates, Marian hymns and prayers, a glossary of terms, and a reference list of Marian religious and lay organizations.

(Some people know right from the start what they want to b...)
Some people know right from the start what they want to be when they grow up. It was that way for Saint Theodora. She was only ten years old when she promised God that she would do whatever God asked of her. She always believed that would be done best by becoming a religious sister. What she did not know was that her promise would take her to the American frontier where she and her fellow sisters founded a school for the higher learning of women and the Sisters of Providence religious community of Indiana, both of which continue to this day, as well as Catholic schools throughout Indiana and Illinois, an orphanage, and free pharmacies. Beautifully illustrated and fun to read, Saint Theodora and Her Promise to God is an inspiring story of how one little girl followed God's call. Saint Theodora's legacy of faith changed the course of young pioneers in the wilderness of Indiana in the mid-1800s and continues to do so today. Saint Theodora, also known as Saint Mother Theodore Guerin, founded the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, in 1840.

Journalist and author Mary K. Doyle has written a poignant but practical handbook for Alzheimer's caregivers that will enlighten anyone touched by this debilitating disease. She offers straightforward guidelines for caregivers and their families, important lessons she learned in the eleven years she has been caring for her beloved husband, Marshall. She writes frankly about: recognizing the warning signs of Alzheimer's; understanding the disease's typical progression; managing conflict with family and friends; the importance of caring for yourself; the emotional, physical, and financial costs of caregiving; and how, when, and where to find help, including sound advice on making the critical choice among assisted-living facilities when that time comes.

(Classic literature illuminated by the Bible. The Bible il...)
Classic literature illuminated by the Bible. The Bible illuminated by classic literature. When Mary K. Doyle was a child, she was entranced with the stories her mother read from Andersen s Fairy Tales. She writes in her introduction: "Make-believe came to life with characters, I could see and hear. Their problems were real to me. Their fears and joys were mine. The underlying lessons and morals intertwined in his enchanting stories teach about loving one another, right and wrong, and the consequences of bullying, lying, and cheating. He also writes of siblings and friends caring for one another. And many of his characters pray and call on God in their times of need." Mary has chosen fifty passages from her fragile childhood copy of Andersen s Fairy Tales, including The Ugly Duckling, The Tinder Box, and The Snow Queen. Her choice of passages from The Message is truly illuminating.

Alzheimer's spouses are faced with perhaps the most difficult promise human beings are asked to keep: the marriage vow to love their husband or wife "despite the physical and emotional ravages of the disease," "until death do us part." In this short but powerful book, Mary K. Doyle, author of Navigating Alzheimer's directly addresses people like her who are caring for a spouse through a sometimes decades-long experience of the disease.
