Child prodigy; has perfect pitch. With Andy Kirk’s orchestra 12 years. years (joined at age of 16) as pianist, arranger, conductor of rehearsals, composed, arranged recorded with band, Night Life and Overhand. Appeared at Cafe Society Uptown and Downtown, 1942-1947.

With Duke Ellington’s orchestra, 6 months, 1943. A composer and arranger for Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glen Gray, Earl Hines, Bob Crosby, Andy Kirk, Louie Armstrong and others. Numerous night club appearances.
