A retainer of the Kumamoto Clan, he was well versed in the Manyoshu anthology of waka poems and ancient practices and usages. Became a disciple of Norinaga Moto-ori and published Norinaga's commentaries on Kojiki the oldest history of Japan in the mythical age. Also participated in Hoknchi Hanawa's compilation of Gunsho-Ruiju, a comprehensive collection of old books and documents. Hirotari Nakajima and Itsutari Wada were his disciples. He was largely responsible for the popularity of the study of Japanese classic in Kumamoto.
