Masao Onishi was born in 1838. He was son of a retainer of the Takasaki Clan (Gumma Prefecture).

Masao Onishi worked with anti-Shogunate samurai of the Mito Clan for the cause of the Meiji Restoration (1868). After the feudal clans were abolished, he became a raw silk merchant in Yokohama.
Joined the Yokohama branch of the Oji Paper Manufacturing Company (1874) and founded the Yokohama Electric Cable Manufacturing Company (1896). He later became president of the Toyo Pharmaceutical and Daian Life Insurance companies.
