Background
Masatada Kitazoe was born in Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture). He was the son of Yogoro.

Career
From a long line of village headman, Masatada Kitazoe succeeded his father (1853) and was successful in administration. Later, participated in the loyalists, movements and made an extensive tour of various districts. At Kyoto, taking to himself the name of Shichi-ro Motoyama (1864) he became intimate with prominent loyalists of that time and worked for the expulsion of foreigners. The Shogun sensing this movement expelled the Choshu Clan from Kyoto and prepared to attack loyalists there. Masatada and others meantime were plotting to attack the Aizu Clan with the help of the ex-pelled Choshu's, but their plot was discovered and they were surprised by the raid of "Shinsengumi," led by Isamu Kond6.In the ensuing battle Masatada was killed.
