Masatoshi Sagawada was a Japanese samurai and poet. Was commonly called Karoku. His pseudonyms included Kosai, Garin and Mokumokusai. He cultivated poetry and was called the best waka composer in the Kanto District. Some of his odes are still well known. He was also an accomplished master of tea ceremony of the Kobori-Enshu school.
Background
Masatoshi Sagawada was born in Japan in 1579, he was a retainer of the Yodo Clan (Kyoto Prefecture). Because his family had lived for generations at Sagawada in Shimotsuke (Tochigi Prefecture), he adopted the name of locale as his family name, a retainer of the Nagaos and later was adopted as his son.

When young, he went to Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture), served Gensai Kido.
