Nomura earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in microbiology at the University of Tokyo in 1957.
Nomura began his career as a post-doctoral fellow in the United States. In 1960, he took a position of an assistant professor at the Osaka University Institute of Protein Research.
Three years later, Masayasu joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin's Department of Genetics and became full professor in 1966. Since 1970, he was the Grace Bell Professor of Biological Chemistry at the University of California in Irvine.
Nomura was a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and Japanese Bio-chemical Society.
On February 10, 1957 Masayasu Nomura married Junko Hamashima. They have a daughter and a son.
