Inouye was also a key scientist involved in the discovery and characterization of retrons, which are retroviral-like elements found in various bacterial genomes. Retrons produce small satellite deoxyribonucleic acid known as multi-copy single stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (msDNA) and have recently been demonstrated to be important virulence determinants for gastrointestinal disease (Elfenbein et al, 2013).
