Masayuki Kusumoto entered the Shokojuku, the private school of Jugo Sugiura in Edo.
Career
During the Sino-Japanese War saw service in China (1894-1895). The following year together with Ryohei Uchida made a geographic tour of the frontiers of Russia. Manchuria and Korea, in the course of which he died of frostbite. He was the first Japanese to explore those areas.
