Mashimizu was born in 1822 in Japan. He belonged to a family who were village headmen for generations.
Mashimizu Zoroku learnt the art of pottery at the age of 12 under his uncle Kitei Wake.
Mashimizu Zoroku founded his own kiln at Gojozaka, Kyoto (1843). Made a reputation by imitating ancient Chinese and Japanese ware. Mostly made utensils for the tea ceremony under the name of Soshitsu Sen, after which he was allowed to use the name Sogaku. His wares bear the stamp of Sogaku, Hyakuju, Zoroku Mashimizu and Zoroku.
