Massimo Bacigalupo received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Rome in 1971. Later, in 1975 he got a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Columbia University.
Massimo Bacigalupo launched his career as an assistant professor at the University of Genoa in 1977-1978. At the same university he was an associate professor. In 1978 Massimo became an assistant professor of the University of Catania and worked there till 1981. He was appointed as a professor of American Literature at the University of Udine in 1987. Since 1990 Bacigalupo has been working as a professor at the University of Genoa.
He was a visiting professor of St. Johns College in 1983, Beinecke Library in 1988, International Yeats Summer School in 1991, Barnard College in 1992, Columbia University in 1995 and Institute for Humanities in University Michigan in 2001.
Bacigalupo is a regular reviewer for Modern Language Review, American Literary Scholarship and other periodicals. He has also contributed to numerous books and periodicals, as well as written essays, translations and editions of works by Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Melville, Dickinson, Frost, Stevens, Pound, Eliot, H.D., Harrison, Heaney and others.
Massimo was a founding member of the Cooperative of Independent Filmmakers in Rome. He made his debut in short films with Quasi una tangent. It received the first prize at the Festival of Montecatini. There followed a series of short films, such as 60 metri per il 31 marzo, 1968, The last summer, 1969, Migrazione,1970.
In 1969, Bacigalupo participated in the 1st European Meeting of Independent Filmmakers in Munich, together with Peter Kubelka, Kurt Kren, Valie Export, Gregory Markopoulos, the Heins, Werner Nekes and Dore O.
In the early 1970s, he completed the short film Warming Up. He also shot Postcard from America. Since 1975, Massimo Bacigalupo has produced numerous videos documenting aspects of the work and life of various artist friends.
In addition to creating new films, Bacigalupo wrote pieces of film criticism on the underground cinema for such magazines as Filmcritica, Bianco & Nero, and the New York-based journal Film Culture.
As a Professor of American Literature and professor of the theory and practice of translation at the Department of Foreign Languages and Cultures of the University of Genoa, Bacigalupo has been involved in the International Poetry Festival in Genoa.
Massimo Bacigalupo is a member of the Ligurian Academy of Sciences and Letters, Italian Association for American Studies, Association Italiana Anglistica and European Association for American Studies.
Massimo Bacigalupo married Angela Kirsten on May 8, 1976. The marriage produced two children - Lorenzo and Giuliano.
