Masuji Yamanouchi was born in 1860 in Oita Prefecture, Japan.
Masuji Yamanouchi graduated from the Naval Academy. Later he was sent to Europe for further studies.
After graduating from Naval Academy Masuji Yamanouchi was commissioned into the Imperial Navy and sent to Europe for further studies. Returning home helped him in founding an arsenal at Kure Naval Station.
Masuji Yamanouchi had a profound knowledge of manufacture of arms and was the inventor of the gun carriage and many other weapons. He was promoted to the post of vice-admiral and was made commander-in-chief of Kure Naval Station (1905).
In 1910 Masuji Yamanouchi retired from Imperial Navy. He was nominated to the House of Peers. Later he founded Nihon Seikojo (Japan Steel Works).
