Mr. Sullivan was trained for architectural practice while a student in the office of Edmund M. Wheelwright a specialist in school work. In 1891, following the latter's appointment as City Architect, the young man became his assistant, and subsequently (1895) his successor to that office. Six years later, in 1901, Sullivan resigned his position in the City, and began private practice as junior partner in the firm of Maginms, Walsh & Sullivan, of which Charles Maginnis and Iimotny Walsh were the original members.
Through the following years until 1930 when he withdrew from the partnership to carry on work independently, Mr. Sullivan was identified with the ecclesiastical and educational buildings for the Roman Catholic Church, all erected in Boston and neighboring cities. Among the more important buildings were Church of the Sacred Heart, Tauton, Preparatory School in Danvers.
