Matsuodayū Tokiwazu

Career
A hereditary stage name adopted by Tokiwazu musicians belonging to and becoming head of the Matsuo school. Matsuodayu II was the most famous of them all. His pupil, Mitosedayu, succeeded to the name in 1906, becoming Matsuodayu III. Being married to a younger sister of Kishisada Shikisa VII, he joined the so-called shimpa (new school) formed by the brothers Shikisa and Nakasuke and quickly rose to fame. With the opening of Teikoku (Imperial) Theatre, however, he withdrew from shimpa (1912) and joined the kyuha or old school.
