Mulhern attended Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, New Jersey. Matt Mulhern was trained as an actor by William Esper at Mason Gross School of the Arts, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting.

From there, he went on to a film, television, and theater career as an actor, appearing in films such as One Crazy Summer, Extreme Prejudice, Biloxi Blues, "Junior," "Walking to the Waterline," "Infinity," "Sunchaser," and others New York theater includes: The One-Armed Manitoba at Ensemble Studio Theater, Surviving Grace at the Union Square Theater, The Night Hank Williams Died at the Orpheum Theater, Wasted at the World Pet Association, Regional appearances at Louisiana Jolla Playhouse in The Glass Menagerie, The Habitation of Dragons, at Pittsburgh Public Theater, the National Tour of Death of a Salesman as Biff opposite Hal Holbrook, and "The Orphans Home Cycle" at Hartford Stage. On television, Mulhern played the Lieutenant on the top ten Columbia Broadcasting System hit Major Dad.
Past guest appearances include National Broadcasting Company"s "Third Watch," "Law and Order," "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," a recurring role on Forex"s Rescue Maine, and appearances on Fox"s Fringe, Columbia Broadcasting System"s "Computer Society of India," National Broadcasting Company"s "The Education of Max Bickford," National Broadcasting Company"s "Editor," and Columbia Broadcasting System"s "Blue Bloods."
He has written and directed two films, Walking to the Waterline, which he also acted in, and Duane Hopwood, starring David Schwimmer, named One of 2005"s Best Films by Roger Ebert.
He also has a novel, Crossing Open Spaces, published by CreateSpace in March 2009.
