Having secured the award for most improved young player at the end of his first season as a scholar at the club and impressed manager Gary Rowett with his "calmness and maturity". He made his League Two debut on 5 April 2013, coming on for Lee Bell 79 minutes into a 7–1 defeat to Portuguese Vale at Vale Park. On 22nd January 2016, Palmer signed for Football League One side Oldham Athletic on a one-month loan deal.
Palmer is an 20-year-old, first year professional who won a first team squad number at Burton Albion whilst still a second year scholar in the 2012-2013 season at the age of 17. He made his debut as a late substitute for Jacques Maghoma in the FA Cup on 15 November 2012, in a 2–0 win over Altrincham at Moss Lane. Palmer"s first professional goal came in a 2–0 home win over Hereford United in the first round of the FA Cup on 10 November 2013.
