Matt Taibbi was born on March 2, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He is the son of a reporter Mike Taibbi.
Matt Taibbi attended Concord Academy, New York University and Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, from which he graduated in 1992. Matt also studied for a year at Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University in Russia.
In 1992, after graduation, Taibbi moved to Uzbekistan, but six months later he forcibly left the country after a critical article about President Islam Karimov. Taibbi subsequently worked at The Moscow Times as a sports editor.
In the mid-1990s, when Matt played professional basketball in Ulaanbaatar, he caught a severe form of pneumonia and returned to Boston for treatment. After recovering, he came back with his family to Russia and became editor of the foreign newspaper Living Here. In 1997, Matt teamed up with Mark Ames to co-edit the controversial English-language Moscow-based free newspaper, The eXile, which was published every two weeks.
In 2002, Taibbi returned to the United States to begin releasing the bi-weekly satirical magazine The Beast. Then he worked as a freelancer. He wrote for The Nation, Playboy, New York Press, Rolling Stone, New York Sports Express and other publications.
Taibbi left the New York Press in August 2005, shortly after its editor Jeff Cohen was forced to quit due to a provocative article by Matt About Pope John Paul II.
Taibbi began to work as the contributing editor for Rolling Stone, writing full articles on both national and international events, as well as a leading weekly political column called The Low Post for the magazine’s website. He continued to write for Rolling Stone but stopped writing an online column. The last online column was called Year of the Rat, which implied the 2008 election season.
Matt covered the 2008 presidential campaign for Real Time with Bill Maher. In 2018, he published a novel, The Business Secrets of Drug Dealing: Adventures of the Unidentified Black Male, as a serialized subscription via email and a website with an anonymous partner.
In 2019, he wrote a chapter for his book, Hate Inc., titled Why Russiagate is this generation's WMD. In the same year, Taibbi launched a political podcast titled Useful Idiots, released through Rolling Stone.
