Matthew James Bellamy is an English musician, singer, guitarist, pianist, and principal songwriter of the rock band Muse. He is recognised for his eccentric stage persona, wide tenor vocal range, and piano and guitar abilities.
Background
Matt Bellamy was born on June 9, 1978 in Cambridge, England. Matt Bellamy's father, George Bellamy, was rhythm guitarist in the 1960s pop group the Tornados, who were the first British band to have a United States number one song, with "Telstar".
Bellamy's mother, Marilyn, was born in Belfast, and moved to England in the 1970s. On her first day in England she met George, who was at the time working as a taxi driver in London. They later moved to Cambridge, where Matthew's older brother Paul was born, followed a couple of years later by Matthew.
Education
Matt studied at Teignmouth Community School.
All the Muse band members were awarded an honorary doctorate degree in Arts by the University of Plymouth on September 26, 2008, for their contributions in the music field.
Muse's origins can be traced to Teignmouth, Devon at Teignmouth Community School, where Bellamy had been in a number of bands previously, including Carnage Mayhem and Gothic Plague with drummer Dominic Howard. When members of Gothic Plague left because of other interests, Bellamy and Howard asked Wolstenholme to join. In 1994, using the name Rocket Baby Dolls, they won the school's "Battle of the Bands" which led them to take the band more seriously, and Muse was born. In the early stage the band struggled and later they were famous for their energetic and visually dazzling live performances.
Matt’s band Muse released their first album in 1999 entitled Showbiz. The album showcased Muse's aggressive yet melancholic musical style, with lyrics about relationships and their difficulties trying to establish themselves in their hometown.
During the production of their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), Muse experimented with instrumentation such as a church organ, Mellotron, animal bones, and an expanded drum kit. There was more of Bellamy's falsetto, arpeggiated guitar, and piano playing.
In 2002, Muse released the first live DVD, Hullabaloo, featuring footage recorded during Muse's two gigs at Le Zenith in Paris in 2001, and a documentary film of the band on tour. A double album, Hullabaloo Soundtrack, was released at the same time, containing a compilation of B-sides and a disc of recordings of songs from the Le Zenith performances. A double-A side single was also released featuring the new songs "In Your World" and "Dead Star".
Muse's third album, Absolution, produced by Rich Costey, Paul Reeve and John Cornfield was released on 15 September 2003. It debuted at number one in the UK and produced Muse's first top-ten hit, "Time Is Running Out", and three top-twenty hits: "Hysteria", "Sing for Absolution" and "Butterflies and Hurricanes". Absolution was eventually certified gold in the US. Muse undertook a year-long international tour in support of the album, visiting Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, and France. On the 2004 US leg of the tour, Bellamy injured himself onstage during the opening show in Atlanta; the tour resumed after Bellamy received stitches.
Muse released another live DVD on 12 December 2005, Absolution Tour, containing edited and remastered highlights from their Glastonbury performance unseen footage from their performances at London Earls Court, Wembley Arena, and the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.
In 2006, Muse released their fourth album, Black Holes and Revelations, co-produced once again with Rich Costey. The album's title and themes reflect the band's interest in science fiction. The album charted at number one in the UK, much of Europe, and Australia. In the US, it reached number nine on the Billboard 200.
During the recording of Muse's fifth studio album The Resistance, Wolstenholme checked into rehab to deal with his alcoholism, which was threatening the band's future. Howard said: "I've always believed in band integrity and sticking together. There's something about the fact we all grew up together. We've been together for 18 years now, which is over half our lives."The Resistance was released in September 2009, the first Muse album produced by the band, with engineering by Adrian Bushby and mixing by Mark Stent. It topped album charts in 19 countries, became the band's third number one album in the UK, and reached number three on the Billboard 200.
In an April 2012 interview, Bellamy said Muse's next album would include influences from acts such as French house duo Justice and UK electronic rock group Does It Offend You, Yeah?. On 6 June 2012, Muse released a trailer for their next album, The 2nd Law, with a countdown on the band's website. The trailer, which included dubstep elements, was met with mixed reactions. The trailer begins with classical sounding music in the background, but progresses into full on dubstep which some fans were not thrilled about, openly expressing their doubts toward the quality of the album; on the other hand, some fans were excited to hear yet another progression in Muse's sound. On 7 June, Muse announced a European Arena tour, the first leg of The 2nd Law Tour. The leg included dates in France, Spain and the UK. The first single from the album, "Survival", was the official song of the London 2012 Summer Olympics, and Muse performed it at the Olympics closing ceremony. The single premiered on BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe show on 27 June.
Muse released their live album Live at Rome Olympic Stadium, on 29 November 2013 on CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray formats. In November 2013, the film had theatrical screenings in 20 cities worldwide. The album contains the band's performance at Rome's Stadio Olimpico on 6 July 2013, in front of over 60,000 people; it was the first concert filmed in 4K format. The concert was a part of the Unsustainable Tour, Muse's mid-2013 tour of Europe.
Muse announced their seventh album, Drones, on 11 March 2015. The following day, they released a lyric video for "Psycho" on their YouTube channel, and made the song available for instant download with the album pre-order. Another single, "Dead Inside", was released on 23 March. Drones was released on 8 June 2015. A concept album about the dehumanisation of modern warfare, it returned to a simpler rock sound with less elaborate production and genre experimentation. It topped the album charts in the UK, the US, Australia and most major markets.
Muse have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, winning the Grammys for Best Rock Album for The Resistance and Drones, two Brit Awards, winning Best British Live Act twice, five MTV Europe Music Awards and eight NME Awards. They have sold over 20 million albums worldwide.
Bellamy besides his appearance in the musical band he was also very popular for his guitar skills, he was also included in The 50 Greatest Guitarists Ever, where he was ranked in 19th position. Bellamy has also been featured in many concerts and world tours of the band round the world.
In 2010, Bellamy made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for smashing the highest number of guitars during a music tour. The record of 140 smashes was set during the Absolution Tour.
Bellamy has shown signs of atheism: "Being an atheist means you have to realize that when you die, that really is it. You've got to make the most of what you've got here and spread as much influence as you can. I believe that you only live through the influence that you spread, whether that means having a kid or making music."
However, more recently Bellamy has shown signs of being an Agnostic or a Deist. In an interview with a Rock Music channel in France (2006), Bellamy states, "I believe in the God of the universe, definitely." In addition, he revealed in a 2007 video inverview that, "I don't believe in heaven or hell, I don't really believe in that version." Bellamy's beliefs are therefore probably closer to the philosophical concept of "The Absolute" as opposed to the structures of organized religions.
Politics
Many of his songs display revolutionary views as well as an opposition to political corruption. "Assassin" and "Uprising" are two notable songs with obvious revolutionary sentiments. In an interview with Q Magazine, Bellamy stated that he is a "left-leaning libertarian". In 2006 Bellamy said that he believed the 9/11 attacks were an "inside job". However, in 2009 he told Rolling Stone that he did not believe this: "There is loads of stuff on the Internet suggesting 9/11 was an inside job. But that is not my belief."
Views
Speaking about his greatest fear, Matt said: "Being impregnated by an alien and giving birth. It'd be awful to give birth to a freak and have to bring it up as your own."
Quotations:
"You can buy a mobile phone which can fire up to four bullets. Handy to have if you’re a psycho."
"Our DNA was mixed with a species from outer space and apes; we’re a mixture of the two."
"The internet provides a lot of amusement when I do decide to stay at home. There's one program which is basically the new Napster. I have a really fast connection, so I can download MP3s and filme. I got the film 'A.I' from it. I've got the computer rigged up to the stereo and we'll have a few friends around for dinner. We sit one in front of the computer and get them to pick any song, and this program will find it and play it almost immediately. You'll find lots of new music that way. Europe's 'The Final Countdown' is the naffest song I have on my computer. I didn't choose it, I hasten to add."
"To have your heart in pieces while every other aspect of your life couldn't go better is a traumatic experience. In appearance, life is fine. But as you put your day in focus, everything turns grey. What happened made me realise that complete, absolute happiness doesn't exist."
"I think the way I am on stage is probably who I really am. Everything else is a persona. It's an unedited version of who you are. For me there's something pure about that."
"I prefer music that invents a universe."
"The best band in the world is Queen, definitely."
