Matthew attended Lund University in 1975-1976, and then he got B.A. at the University of California, Berkeley in 1977.
Before launching Ovations International in 1996, Matthew spent eight years on Capitol Hill, working as a speechwriter and special assistant to Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Jim Wright, and as legislative assistant to Representative Leon Panetta. His communications career also includes senior-level speechwriting and executive communications positions at MCI Communications, GTE, and Pepsi-Cola International.
Matthew has developed speeches and trained speakers for a variety of prestigious venues, including the Economic Club of Detroit, the National Press Club, Houston Forum, Cleveland City Club, SuperComm, the Microsoft CEO Summit, and the UN General Assembly.
In 1991, Matthew helped found The Center for Voting and Democracy and served as its president and board chair for five years. Currently he is the president of the Shakespeare Oxford Society, Matthew is actively involved in forming Study Abroad Alumni International.
In 1984 Matthew married Lora Lackey, they had a daughter Katherine Hope.
