In 1968 - 1969 Matthew studied at Westminster College. In 1975 he received Bachelor of Arts (with honors) at Indiana University-Bloomington. Then he earned Doctor of Medicine at Indiana University-Bloomington in 1979, and then he had a postdoctoral study there in 1979 - 1983.
Dr. Galvin was a medic in the U.S. Army when he delved into the health care industry, pursuing his interest in medicine and how it affects the human body. He is a diplomate in child and adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
Commencing his career as a staff psychiatrist and associate and acting director at Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital in the 1980s, Dr. Galvin began serving as a child psychiatrist at various facilities across the state of Indiana. He is currently a psychiatrist for the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the counseling center at Christian Theological Seminary. He has also served as a clinical associate professor at the Indiana University of Health since 1995. Alongside his primary roles, he is a board member of Infancy Onward and founding member of the Indiana University Conscience Project.
The author of several books, including “Doubtless You Know,” “The Lyric of Lafracoth,” and “Carlotta Learns about Her Medicine,” Dr. Galvin has also contributed numerous articles to professional journals and was coauthor and editor of several additional publications.
Matthew describes his political views as "independent."

In 1979 Matthew married a modern dancer and choreographer Deborah Chernin, with whom he has two children: Joseph Chernin and Sarah Reppert.
