Education
Doctor Goldstein received his bachelor"s degree in statistics and mathematics from City College and a doctorate in mathematical statistics from the University of Connecticut. He has been a professor of mathematics and statistics at Baruch College, Cooper Union, and at the University of Connecticut. He has published numerous books and articles
Doctor Goldstein is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Career
He was appointed Chancellor on September 1, 1999, and is the first City University graduate to head the University, having received his undergraduate degree from City College. Previously, he had been president of Baruch College (1991-1998), Adelphi University, and The Research Foundation of The City University of New New York He is widely credited for leading the revitalization of the City University of New York system, including raising admission and testing standards and implementing University-wide administrative reforms, increasing full-time faculty hires by over 1200 since 1999, creating the William East. Macaulay Honors College at City University of New York, The City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism, and The City University of New York School of Professional Studies.
He conceived and implemented City University of New York"s first capital fundraising campaign which raised over $1.4 billion and recently announced a new phase aimed at raising a total of $3 billion in philanthropic contributions.
On April 12, 2013, he announced his plans for retirement, effective in the early summer. Doctor Goldstein initiated plans for a new community college, The City University of New York School of Public Health at Hunter College and a City University of New York School of Pharmacy, to be located at York College.
He proclaimed a "Decade of Science at City University of New York, leading to new capital funding for a $1 billion City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center at City College, new science facilities at City University of New York campuses in each of the five boroughs of New York City, and the recruitment and retention of distinguished scientists from throughout the nation and the world. During his tenure, City University of New York student performance on the State"s Teacher Certification exams rose sharply to over a 98% pass rate.
